Who are Zappify?
Zappify was set up in 2020 after Keith Robinson and Paul Smith saw an opportunity to innovate in the networking space. Using their years of experience in technology and business to transform an outdated medium, paper business cards.
Every year 10 billion business cards are printed across the globe and 88% of them are thrown away within a week. Meaning their effectiveness when it comes to networking is low but their impact on the environment is detrimental. (Source)
This is where Zappify comes in, they have come up with not only a cost effective solution to replace paper business cards but a much more sustainable option.
Starting from just £10 a month, individuals and businesses can sign up to a business card and use that card for networking. You can easily update your details, share your key details such as Linked in profile or company details.
The environmental impact of paper business cards:
It takes 150 trees to print 10,000 business cards, leading to deforestation. Forest loss is the cause of around 10% of global warming. (Source)
When trees are cut down:
Loss of Biodiversity: Forests are home to a wide variety of plants and animals. When forests are cleared, these species lose their habitat.
Biodiversity is crucial for life on Earth, providing food, energy, medicine, fresh water, soil purification, pest control, waste breakdown, and more. Without it, our environment cannot sustain our needs for survival. High biodiversity areas are more resilient to changes and disturbances, including climate change.
Increased emissions into the atmosphere: Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
When forests are cleared, this stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating global warming. This loss of tree cover also eliminates the natural cooling effect forests provide, further disrupting climate stability.
Increased Soil Erosion: Trees play a critical role in maintaining soil health by preventing erosion and maintaining moisture levels. When trees are removed, the soil becomes exposed and prone to erosion, leading to degraded landscapes, flooding, and landslides.
These effects can devastate local communities, agriculture, and water sources, disrupting livelihoods and food security.
Zappify are not just saving trees:
Not only are Zappify saving trees through their digital business cards but they are going that extra step further by planting trees for their business cards. What does their campaign look like? Well:
- 1 tree per individual virtual business card
- 1 tree per corporate user (capped at 10 per account)
- 1 tree per enterprise user (capped at 50 per account)
It is amazing that Zappify are not only saving trees but now planting them too. The trees they will be planting are mangroves in areas such as Kenya.
Mangrove forests help stabilise coastlines, prevent erosion, and support unique ecosystems that provide vital nurseries for marine life.
Beyond environmental impact, these projects support coastal communities where many rely on mangroves for employment and nutrition, creating opportunities and strengthening livelihoods in some of the most underdeveloped areas.
