Mozambique is a country rich in natural beauty, with nearly 41% of its land covered in forests. But deforestation, largely driven by agriculture, is taking a heavy toll on these vital ecosystems. Around 65% of the land cleared is used for farming, the main source of income and food for rural communities. To truly protect and restore these forests, it’s essential that local communities are part of the solution.
Take Amelia, for example. As a mother of two, she was working hard cleaning homes, but still struggling to make ends meet. Feeding her family, covering school fees, and paying for electricity were constant challenges. That all changed when she learned about a local reforestation project. Amelia secured a job as a planter, spending her days planting mangroves and collecting propagules to grow the next generation of trees.
This opportunity has transformed Amelia’s life. She’s not only helping restore Mozambique’s mangrove forests but is also earning a stable income that supports her daughters’ education and provides a brighter future for her family.
This is what reforestation is all about—restoring the environment while empowering communities to thrive.
